Two area high school basketball teams played for CIF championships on Friday. One team made history, while the other repeated it.
The Mission Prep boy's basketball team looked to avenge last year's loss to Central Valley Christian in the CIF-Central Section title game. However, for the second straight year the Royals lost to CVC in the Division 5 title game 53-37.
The Royals trailed by 16 points but trimmed it to two points in the third quarter. But the top seeded Cavaliers outscored them 24-10 the rest of the way. Kevin Laird led the Royals with 18 points in the defeat.
Mission Prep fell to 13-16 overall and will travel for a Southern California Regional game next Tuesday. The seedings for the Regional will be determined on Sunday.
The North County Christian girls went down to Ontario on Friday and made school history by capturing their program's first ever CIF crown. The Crusaders won the CIF-Southern Section Division 6A title by beating Calvary Baptist 46-33. NCC had its large lead cut to two after being outscored 20-6 in the third quarter but dominated the final quarter.
Sophomore Cristy Scarson led the Crusaders with 19 points. Fellow sophomore Brianna Feld added 11 points.
It was just the second time in school history the NCC girls advanced to a CIF final, the last time was in 2003. NCC will play next week in the SoCal Regional. The seeding will be determined on Sunday.
Two more teams go for titles on Saturday. The Mission Prep girls play Corcoran in Fresno at 10am. The St.Joseph High girls will battle Windward in the Division 5A final at 2:45pm at the Walter Pyramid at Long Beach State.

All of the CIF Final performing schools are private schools. Interesting.
