LOS ANGELES (AP) - Newly elected California attorney general Kamala Harris will hold her first news conference since winning a seat that is expected to propel her to a role of political prominence.

The narrow victory by Harris gave Democrats a sweep of all statewide offices in California.

It also makes her the first woman and the first person of color to hold a position that is often seen as a springboard to the governor's office.

Harris, who is 46, is the daughter of a black father and a mother from India. She defeated Republican Steve Cooley, the Los Angeles County district attorney, who conceded last week.

Her Tuesday news conference in Los Angeles will be followed by a celebration with supporters in San Francisco.
