Christmas night, a person shot two people on the Santa Margarita Ranch. Multiple law enforcement sources and others close to the case tell KSBY, 20-year-old Andrew Downs shot 61-year old Kathy Yeager at a home she was house sitting on the ranch. When her sister, 64-year old Beverly Reilly came in later, he shot her too.
When another relative entered the home and saw what had happened, he took off running. Downs then got in a truck and started chasing after him. After getting the truck stuck in the mud, Downs took another vehicle, approached at least two other homes, attacked another person, and was eventually subdued by a victim and his son until police got there.
In the meantime the county issued a reverse 9-1-1, warning people in the area to stay locked inside their homes.
One of the men who subdued Downs says he's known Downs since pre-school. He says Downs was diagnosed with schizophrenia in high school. Downs' Facebook page says he graduated from Atascadero High School in 2009.
