New downtown officers start January 2nd

Two new police officers will be patrolling downtown San Luis Obispo after the New Year.

It is a part of the city's goal to renew the growing downtown area.

The full time officers will be on bikes, on foot or in their vehicles patrolling the downtown core and nearby residential area during the day.

They will be dealing with illegal behavior such as panhandling, drunk in public and vandalism.

"Part of their responsibility as well is to work with the business owners to try and build that relationship, community orientating policing and really establish a way to deal with these types of problems and find solutions long term for them," said Captain Christopher Staley, San Luis Obispo Police Department.

The two new officers start on January 2nd.
