Competition for starting positions is fierce this preseason for the Cabrillo High football team. The Conquistadores are coming off their best season in years, when they went 11-3 and finished runners-up in C.I.F.
Head coach Craig Knowles says they lost several of their big playmakers to graduation, including T.J. Babauta, Isaiah Montes, Henry Fienga and Dan French. Knowles says juniors and seniors are all competing this preseason for playing time. So he wasn't able to tell us some of his starters at skill positions like quarterback. "These guys are really going to try to build on what they've established and that's been my whole goal since I took over is to set the bar higher and higher. And these guys got their work cut out for them," said Knowles.
Players say no one has forgotten about losing the Los Padres League and C.I.F. titles to rival Lompoc either. "It was definitely a tough loss especially against our cross-town rivals. and it's definitely motivating us to put in that much more effort and work to hopefully go farther this year," said senior co-captain Nick Pence, who's slotted at running back and outside linebacker.
Cabrillo opens the season Friday, August 24 at San Marcos High. The Conquistadores play at Righetti on August 31 before their home opener on September 7 against Dos Pueblos.
