There may not be a more debated issue in the country today than gun control.
Regardless of your personal view, new legislation going into effect January 1 will impact thousands in California.
The state will begin compiling a database of rifle and shotgun purchases starting Wednesday. It will be run similarly to the existing database on handgun purchases.
Safety tests will also be required for those purchasing a rifle or shotgun. Previously, safety tests had only been required for handguns.
Gun stores will now be required to post signs about proper gun storage in homes with children and there will be tougher penalties on parents who don't follow the storage requirements.
Another law taking effect will require firearm owners to keep all guns and ammunition locked and stowed at all times if they live with someone who is barred from owning a firearm because of a criminal or mental health record.
