New immigration legislation could hit Ag industry hard

The agriculture industry could face disaster if a new immigration policy being discussed in Congress becomes law.

The E-Verify Modernization Act of 2011 would require all American busineeses to run their employees through E-Verify, a program that determines if the person can legally work in the United States. About 80 percent of field workers are illegal immigrants.

If passed, farmers are worried their entire workforce would be wiped out at a time when the economy is still recovering from the recession.

We'll dive into the debate tonight on KSBY News at 5 and 6.
