A new report card out suggests that one local hospital out ranks the rest when it comes to patient care and satisfaction.
All four major hospitals in the area, French Hospital Medical Center in San Luis Obispo, Marian Medical Center in Santa Maria, Arroyo Grande Community Hospital in Arroyo Grande and Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center in San Luis Obispo, were included in this report conducted by the California HealthCare Foundation.
In summary, French Hospital was the only facility to get a "superior" ranking in critical care.
It scored a 6.21 percent in ICU mortality rate, compared to the state average of 12.53 percent.
In this same category, Marian Medical Center ranked "above average" with 9.49 percent, while Sierra Vista Regional and Arroyo Grande Community had "average" scores of 12.12 and 14.22 percent, respectively.
Of the four, French Hospital is also the only one to rank "superior" in patient safety, with 98 percent, compared to the state average, 94 percent.
The other three received "above average" scores ranging from 95-97 percent.
French Hospital scored a 72 percent in "overall patient experience," far better than the state average 64 percent. The score gave French the only "superior" mark in this category, as well.
Sierra Vista Regional received an "average" score of 66 percent, while Arroyo Grande Community and Marian Medical both scored "below average," with 50 and 49 percent, respectively.
In response to it receiving the lowest patient experience scores, Marian Medical Center released this statement:
"The overall patient experience results reported by California Hospital Compare are from an incredibly low sample size. The results are not consistent with the statistically valid reporting of patient satisfaction at Marian by Avatar, an independent third party vendor, which shows excellence in patient satisfaction for many services at Marian."
The report rated more than 240 hospitals for heart attack, heart failure, heart bypass surgery, pneumonia, and maternity, which are the five most common reasons for hospital visits.
According to the report, the only hospital in our area that chose not to take part in the survey was Lompoc Valley Medical Center.
