Athletes who suffer concussions may need longer follow-up medical care.
Using EEG and MRI brain mapping, Canadian researchers found brain waves remain abnormal in young athletes for two years after a concussion.
The motor pathways of the brain also atrophy.
Older athletes whose last concussion was 30 years prior, had more memory and attention deficits similar to the early symptoms of Parkinson's disease.
