New sorority hopes to make historic Sanitarium its home

A new sorority has been added this year making Kappa Kappa Gamma the ninth panhellenic sorority at Cal Poly.

Kappa Kappa Gamma hopes to claim the historic Sanitarium in downtown as the chapter's new home.

A public hearing is set for Wednesday to address the issue. The hearing is at 6:00 p.m. at San Luis Obispo City Hall.

The sorority must get a use permit from the SLO Planning Commission in order to move forward, but according to the staff report everything looks good for neighborhood compatibility and parking concerns.

Sorority sisters recently sent letters to area homes.

"The letters said neighbors if they would write a letter in support and they attached a stamped envelope so we would send a letter to the planning commission. And with the letter came a batch of cookies. I still have the letter, but I ate all the cookies," explaind Jack McDonough, who lives across the street from the Sanitarium.

If anyone appeals the Planning Commission's decision, it will then go before the City Council. The Sanitarium was a private hospital in the 1880's and later a private residence. It also became a bed and breakfast for many years and often hosted music and poetry events.

If the sorority is granted the use permit, it would sign a five year lease.

Currently, there's a fraternity in the same neighborhood as the Sanitarium near Osos and Santa Barbara Streets. There's also a multi-student housing facility across the street.
