The mental anguish of not knowing whether a person's cancer has returned, may now come down to a simple blood test.
Johns Hopkins University researchers examined the DNA of tumors from six patients with breast or colon cancer.
They have discovered each cancerous tumor has its own genetic fingerprint.
Doctors used this information to track cancerous activity in the body.
They could tell whether the disease had been successfully treated or needed more aggressive therapies.
This could lead the way for a new, personalized blood test to determine whether a person's cancer has returned.
Johns Hopkins has filed for a patent on the technology.
It could be ready to use within the next several years.
