It's a day nearly two years in the making, the new Target store in San Luis Obispo opened its doors at 8 a.m. Wednesday. The store's grand opening will be Sunday, July 24.
So far the store is getting rave reviews. It brought about 240 jobs to the area and features a pharmacy, a cafe, a Starbucks and a fresh market.
One group of women who graduated from Cal Poly 30 years ago spent several hours in the store Wednesday. They said they are pretty jealous they did not have a Target when they were in school.
"I think it's a huge draw and I think it will probably pull in from the surrounding towns and really give a good boost to the San Luis Obispo business and tax base," said Melanie Randolph, who now lives in the Bay area.
Some nearby businesses expressed some concern about having a one-stop superstore in the area but one family tells KSBY News they will still go to other stores because they cannot buy absolutely everything at Target.
One thing the store is hoping people will buy is school supplies. Target opened just in time to accommodate that back-to-school shopping rush.
In addition to the Target store the Mac Superstore opened Monday and its grand opening is scheduled for July 30. An Olive Garden and ATT Store will open later this summer and a Dick's Sporting Goods store is scheduled to open early next year.
