Controversy surrounding the new University of California logo is heating up.
Social media websites, like Twitter and Facebook, have been flooded with comments about the new symbol.
About 45,000 people have already signed an online petition, asking the university to change the new symbol.
"You're talking about years of tradition. Maybe not just with them but with their family or before them. So for it to change overnight, you know, they take it personal," said Miguel Cadena of Littlefish Marketing in Orcutt.
University officials tols KSBY's Nikki Ibarra they wanted a more modern look. Despite what skeptics have to say, Caneda said it was a smart move by the university.
"The school isn't changing. It's just the logo. There's people that are going to complain about it but I don't think that people are going to start choosing another school just based on, on the fact that it doesn't look the same as what it was before," added Caneda.
UC officials told KSBY this new symbol will not replace the traditional seal on diplomas and official documents.
