A Santa Barbara man is living proof that it is never too late to go for your dream. At 38 years old, Joshua Johnson is training to become the oldest rookie in NFL history.

Back in December, the 38 year old did some personal inventory and soul searching.
"Kicking has always been in the back of the mind and I was really looking for a challenge, a physical, mental and a spiritual challenge and I thought what better challenge than to actually go for the NFL," said Johnson.

And go for it he has. After not kicking for more than a year, Joshua came out to Santa Barbara City College's La Playa Stadium. And after barely warming up, Johnson said he nailed a 40 yard field goal attempt through the crooked uprights.

Since then, he has made training his full-time job. He has hired a personal trainer and two mental skills coaches.
He is training for a regional NFL combine in Los Angeles on May 29.

So far, the training is paying off. "I'm certainly stronger. I'm getting stronger. I have three more months to train," said Johnson.

Joshua was a star kicker at Dos Pueblos High. He walked on at San Diego State but after redshirting his freshman year he gave up the sport and transferred schools.

His father, a longtime principal in Santa Barbara, never gave up hope of someday watching his son in the NFL.
Oliver Johnson died a few years ago and it is in his memory that Joshua pursues his NFL dream.

"It just gives me strength that I'm doing it in tribute to him because this NFL or bust is bigger than me, it's about him, it's about inspiring others, it's about realizing your full potential," added Johnson.

He passed one test while KSBY Sports was there. He made four straight 40-yard field goals earning $100 from his friend Richard. While some may bet against him in his journey, Joshua says there is no plan b, it is the NFL or bust.

By the way, 33 year old Saverio Rocca holds the title of the oldest NFL rookie. He debuted as a punter with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2007.
