Nipomo man arrested on suspicion of hit and run

The California Highway Patrol arrested a man on Thursday who they say was drunk when he caused a crash, fled the scene, and then barricaded himself inside his home.

The crash happened just before 1:00 pm Thursday at the intersection of Tefft Street and Mary Avenue. The CHP says Gerardo Avalos, 48, of Nipomo, failed to stop at a red light and struck another car. They say Avalos then left the scene.

Officers tracked Avalos to his home on Jupiter Drive, where they say he locked himself inside and refused to come out. Officers forced their way in and arrested him.

He faces several charges, including DUI, hit and run and resisting a police officer.

The other driver involved in the crash suffered only minor injuries.
