Nipomo man is facing vandalism and arson charges

A Nipomo man is facing vandalism and arson charges in connection to a house fire.

The fire started at around 9:30 p.m. Wednesday night in the 1300 block of La Quinta Drive in Nipomo.

One person was taken to the hospital following the fire. The extent of that person's injuries is not known.

At the same time, the San Luis Obispo Country Sheriff's Office received reports of vandalism in the area, someone threatening neighbors and a fight about a block over.

Deputies say during the fight, 35-year-old Jacob Bernerd was hit in the head with what's believed to be a two-by-four piece of wood.

He was apprehended because deputies believe he started the house fire, broke some windows and damaged some cars.

They believe Bernerd used to live in the home.

He was taken to a local hospital with a skull fracture.

They're still looking for whoever hit him.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Sheriff's Office or Crime Stoppers at 549-STOP.
