Paso Robles native Bob Cantu nearly led the USC Trojans to an upset over 21st ranked Oregon in his debut as the Trojans' interim head coach. The Ducks held on for a 76-74 win. Oregon won its sixth-straight game to improve to 15-2 overall and 4-0 in Pac-12 play. Oregon opened with four-straight conference wins for the first time in 39 years when it was part of the Pac 8.
The Trojans fell to 7-11 overall and 2-3 in conference. Cantu was named interim coach for the remainder of the season on Monday after administrators fired Kevin O'Neill. Cantu has been an assistant coach with the program for 12 years. The 38 year old started his coaching career at Mission Prep and Cuesta College.
The Trojans were down 75-67 with 2:11 remaining. J.T. Terrell, who had 22 points, made two free throws to cut Oregon's lead to 75-74 with 33.1 seconds left. USC was able to get the ball back but missed a 3-pointer and a couple of putbacks with Oregon's Arsalan Kazemi finally grabbing the rebound.
Damyean Dotson scored 16 points to lead the Ducks.
