Twelve apartments were evacuated after an entire complex caught fire Wednesday morning in Santa Maria. The fire started just before 10 a.m. at an apartment building at 929 East Jones Street. Fire crews say the flames started on the first floor and spread to the second floor. The fire ignited a nearby tree, melting insulation on a power line and leaving a live wire close to the flames.
Firefighters are continuing to mop up the fire. They say no injuries were reported and no one was taken to the hospital. Apartment residents were evaluated on scene for smoke inhalation.
No one was home when the fire started inside Unit 35. An elderly woman lives there with two cats, which have not been found. Investigators are still looking into what caused the fire.
