My dad is full all kind of words of wisdom. well, he's full of a lot of things, but he does have some good words of wisdom. And one of the things he says is to always take the scenic route when given the option. Well, that's not hard to do around here. And when photographer Kelly Teel and I did that on a recent trip from Paso Robles to Cambria we found all kinds of proof, there's No Place Like Home.
From 101 in Paso Robles to Highway 1 just outside cayucos, there is a stretch of road called 46 West. It's a way to get from here to there, but its also one of the prettiest little stretches of highway anywhere. It offers up an amazing vistas, side trips and stops along the way people plan vacations around. "We stopped at two wineries on the way over." says Cathy Oberg from Dinuba. She and friends from
North Carolina were checking out the view from one of the overlooks along 46.
Vineyard Drive cuts across 46 and is home to a cluster of great wineries. "They're not crowded. People are really friendly, the wine is very good, and it's just a really nice, layback kind of a vibe." says Julie Bakker from Visalia. She and her friends traveled from from the central valley to enjoy a picnic and the views that are right in our own backyard. They chose Halter Ranch Winery because of it's country feel and the historic home that serves as it's backdrop. "It's just really beautiful with the creek and the wooded trees and the Vineyard. It's just beautiful out here."
Most wineries along this road offer up beautiful venues for taking a break. And some of them are the super-stars of the wine world these days. Denner is one of a handful along this road profiled by Wine Spectator magazine last month. Wine aficionados say you'll find some of the best wine in america on this road, but even if wine ain't your thing, the views are worth a visit.
There are all kinds of picturesque spots along Vineyard to stop and watch the world go by while you simply take it all in. If you have the time to venture Peachy Canyon, you'll feel like you're on top of the world from the patio of Calcareous Winery.
A little exploration down and around Vineyard will likely help you leave any worries you have in your rear view mirror. The Mossy Oaks, picturesque farms, and wildlife along the way serve a nice reminders of where it is we live and the little escapes available to us on any given day. "Like the cattle on the hillside, and the green and when the grapes are in bud, it's beautiful. Summer, Winter, it doesn't matter what time it is." says Bakker.
Take your time because you'll likely be sharing the road with bicyclists, but you shouldn't hurry this drive anyway. And once get you head back to 46 and over the mountain, the beautiful rolling hills yet another panorama of this masterpiece mother nature created around us. "We have friends with us from North carolina and they say this is the most beautiful thing they've ever seen." says Dinuba.
And lucky for us, it's all in our own backyard.
