When I first moved back home a little more than two years ago, there were a couple of things I couldn't wait to do. And one of them almost brought me to tears, it felt so familiar, fun and comforting. It was at San Luis Obispo's Thursday night Downtown Farmers Market I found this tasty proof, There's No Place Like Home.
It's hard to miss the barbecue crew in front of McLintocks saloon at the south end of San Luis Obispo's farmer's market. They take their job pretty seriously. They begin the ritual every week with a group rendition of "God Bless America...Land that I love." And that job is to make serving up the crowds that gather, fun. Not only for themselves, but those waiting in the long line that is always part of the program here. In fact the crowds start lining up about an hour before things get going. "Yeah, I get here around 5:15, or 5:20." says Amalia Galtert who comes down every Thursday with her son Noah.
And it continues until closing time, or the good food runs out, which ever comes first. But once Tony and the gang kick off this cook out, the wait gets pretty entertaining. Because they are non-stop action.
"Whattya have whattya have!?" McLintock's president Tony Breault yells to the crowd. "I love to hear the hollering and the yelling, and they bring everybody in and they get everybody all enthused about it." says Helen Saulsbury of Arroyo Grande.
Presentation is part of lure to this line, and McLintocks president Tony Breault seems to love putting on the show each and every Thursday night. "Five short ribs!" he yells. "We started this in 1976. We serve 2000-2500 customers every week. " As the next one approaches, he delivers his greeting so everyone can hear. "Would you like a rib? Yeah, one beef rib. One bone out! One bone out! Bone appetite sir, bone appetite! Hi folks how you doin tonight?"
It's a well-organized operation. Constant chatter, constant entertainment, and constant proof, There's No Place Like Home.
