It's a tradition with a function. The folks at the Mid State Fair have to use a lot of cattle for rodeo and ag events. And they have to get the cattle to town.... So, they gather the troops and round up about 100 head of cattle and drive them right through town.
I got back in the saddle with some old friends and some new ones and got in on the fun.
It's not the kind of thing you see every day. A herd of cattle and a crew of cowboys and girls heading right through town. But for almost the last 20 years, it's been been the way the Mid-State fair gets started.
Fair President Steve Arnold admits there have been a few mishaps through the years. "A wayward steer in a neighbors yard, but for the most part the community loves it."
The cattle will be used for livestock competitions and events throughout the run of the fair, and this is a way to showcase the ag roots of the big summer gathering. There are about as many cowboys as their are cows. And that's a good thing when you consider the route.
The drive goes from Paso Robles GMC on Golden Hill Road, down Union to Riverside and on into the fairgrounds. "We are lucky we have some of the best cowboys in the west here. (cut rowley part) that really helps. a lot of people line the streets. kid, it's pretty amazing. It's part of their history. it's the west." says Fair Board Member Mark Borjon.
It's a great way to start off one of the great events of summertime on the central coast. And Borjon says It's tradition that never gets old. "One thing about this entire community, just like you Jeanette, it is what it is, we're all family and it's nice for the people moving in to know what it's all about."
