BERKELEY, Calif. (AP) - A 24-year-old hiker is dead after a fall from a Berkeley Hills rock on University of California property.

The San Francisco Chronicle (http://bit.ly/SwofQf ) says Jonathan Mendiola Urbina of San Pablo had been hiking on Grizzly Peak with two cousins and two friends on Wednesday evening when he wandered away from the group.

UC Berkeley police Capt. Margo Bennett says Mendiola Urbina decided to climb up on a large rock and fell.

The death appears to be an accident but is still under investigation.

None of those in the hiking group are affiliated with the university.
