NSBC Athletic Roundtable names Sousa, Cusack Athletes of the Week

Two local high school stars, who helped end their schools' losing streaks, were recognized by the Northern Santa Barbara County Athletic Roundtable on Monday in Orcutt.

St. Joseph High running back Scotty Cusack was named the Male Athlete of the Week. Cusack racked up 118 receiving yards and 41 rushing yards on 7 carries for a total of 159 yards in the Knights' win at across-the-street rival Righetti last Friday. Cusack scored two touchdowns in the Knights' 22-10 win to capture the coveted Shield from the Warriors. It was the Knights' first win over the Warriors in at least 23 years.

"We lost to them the past two years so we came out strong with what we wanted to do. What Gary {wilson, Righetti head coach} said, we wanted it more. We were excited to win," said Cusack. "Last year, I was out for almost the whole season with my season injury so it feels great to be back."

Righetti High girls tennis player Annette Sousa was named Female Athlete of the Week. The junior won five of her six singles sets last week in Righetti's two Pac 7 League victories. Sousa won all 3 of her sets, 6-1, 6-0 and 6-3 against San Luis Obispo. The Warriors beat the Tigers 10-8 for their first win over SLO High since 2001.

After the team's slow start, the Warriors have turned things around.

"We switched up the line-up from the beginning. In the beginning we were off to a rocky start so Steve (Dubransky, Righetti coach) changed the line-up and we're winning a lot more now and we're having a lot of fun with it too," said Sousa.

Righetti is 7-3 overall and 4-2 in league matches. The Warriors are in a three-way tie for second place with Paso Robles and San Luis Obispo after the first half of league play.
