The Northern Santa Barbara County Athletic Round Table recognized two local pitchers for their impressive weeks on Monday in Orcutt. Righetti High softball star Katie Chenault and Allan Hancock southpaw Nathan Thompson earned Female and Male Athlete of the Week honors.
Chenault, a senior, struck out 22 hitters in an 8-inning 1-0 loss to Dos Pueblos in the title game of a tournament over the weekend. She went 2-1 with a 40 strikeouts in 14 2/3 innings during the tournament.
"Each batter was pretty easy to attack them and everything. I was just throwing them my rise ball and my changeups to throw them off guard and everything," said Chenault when recalling her game against DP.
For the season, Chenault is hitting .438 at the plate. She is 5-1 with a 1.22 ERA on the season with 71 strikeouts in 28 2/3 innings . The Warriors are off to a 7-1 start and return to action Saturday at Buchanan High.
Thompson, a freshman at Hancock, outdueled Lucas Martin last week in the Bulldogs' 1-0 conference opening victory against rival Cuesta College. The Santa Ynez High graduate carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning and finished with a 2-hit shutout. "I had a good game plan with my pitching coach. Just go in there and throw strikes, execute my pitches and they'll get themselves out almost and that's what happened," said Thompson, who struck out 9 Cougars.
Thompson is 3-1 with a 0.52 ERA on the season. Hancock hosts Santa Barbara City College on Tuesday afternoon in a conference game.
