Several athletes turned in impressive performances last week during league finals. So the Northern Santa Barbara County Athletic Round Table faced its toughest decision of the year when it came to selecting its athletes of the wek.
In the end, Santa Maria High tennis player Kevin Mac was named the Male Athlete of the Week, while Lompoc sprinter Chantel Dunson earned Female Athlete of the Week honors.
Mac won four matches last week to become the first Saint to win the Los Padres League singles title in more than a decade. The junior said he cruised through the first three rounds of the LPAL Finals before he started to cramp in the final because he did not eat enough during the day. "I started to cramp the last game. It was really, really tough because I couldn't jump on my left leg anymore. It started to cramp my whole body, but somehow I made the second set and I was able to win and I'm really happy about that," said Mac, who will compete at the CIF Individual Tournament later this month.
Dunson led the Braves to a second place finish in the league track and field finals. The junior won the 100 meter dash in 12.87 seconds and the 200 in 27.19 seconds. She also anchored the Braves' victorious 4x100 meter relay. "I think I did really well considering I'm coming off an injury. I've been out for the past 4 weeks as my coach said I didn't compete in the two meets, which I really wish I could have. But I did listen to my athletic trainer, which is why I was able to compete really well," said Dunson.
Dunson and Mac will both compete individually at CIF in the coming weeks.
