In today's local spotlight...'tis the season for all things traditional... and festive and if you missed the Santa Maria Civic Theatre's production of "Nutcracker," no worries. You can catch another version of the Tchaikovsky classic this weekend at the Performing Arts Complex in Templeton...
It's a huge production with more than 65 cast members of various ages and experience... some professional, some not. Many are returning for roles they've come to love.
Michael Scribner is reprising his role as Drossomeyer again this year, even though he's since moved to Utah to attend Ballet West.
"Two weeks ago, I flew out 900 miles and can't wait for opening night," he tells us.
Ballerina Chelsea Farrer agrees that her experiences dancing various roles in "Nutcracker" only increases her excitement for the next production. "I think it's more fun when you're older and you get to experience all the different roles and try on the different, pretty costumes and wear the point shoes," she says.
It's not difficult to grasp the attraction, especially for young girls. After all, the Nutcracker is the quintessential princess fairy tale... complete with heroic suitors, literally sweeping the ballerina's off their feet.
"I trust him completely," says Brianna Long of her partner in Dance of the Sugarplum Ferry. "So when I jump into the air, I just.. I know he's going to catch me," she says with a smile.
"Nutcracker" is a real spectacle. The music is larger than life and the production at the PAC is lush and full of color. The dancers are sharp and the steps clean. But some would argue the big draw is not the flawless performance of the star dancers, but the antics of the tiny dancers....some of whom are appearing in their first show.
"Nutcracker" at the PAC in Templeton is presented by the North County Dance and Performing Arts Foundation.
Performances are Friday night at 7:30, with matinees on Saturday and Sunday at 2.
Tickets are $24 for adults, $19 for students and seniors.
