OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - An Oakland police officer is recovering after being shot and a suspect is in custody after the second shooting of an Oakland police officer this week.
Authorities say the officer - a 13-year veteran of the department - was shot in the leg as he and another officer chased a suspect in the city's Fruitvale district Friday evening.
Oakland police spokeswoman Johnna Watson says the trouble started a little before 6 p.m. when the two officers were called to investigate a car crash.
While at the scene, the officers heard gunfire. Watson says when they went to investigate they confronted a man with a gun, who shot the officer, then ran from the area.
The suspect was arrested nearby. At least one of the officers returned fire, but the suspect was not hurt. His name has not been released.
