SANTA ANA, Calif. (AP) - Orange County prosecutors say a mother who gave birth to a girl, suffocated the baby and dumped her in a restaurant dumpster has been sentenced to 15 years to life in prison.
Spokeswoman Farrah Emami says 21-year-old Juana Perez Valencia was sentenced Friday after being found guilty of second degree murder and other charges in September.
On Dec. 22, 2009, Valencia gave birth to a baby girl in the restroom of Sombrero's, a Stanton Mexican restaurant. After suffocating the baby, she put the body in a plastic bag and threw it into a dumpster.
The next day Valencia went to the hospital for treatment, claiming she'd been hurt in a fall and denied giving birth despite medical evidence.
The hospital contacted authorities, who discovered the baby's body in their investigation.
