Officials: Atascadero water safe to drink, but leave meters alone

The SoCal Gas Company is advising people affected by the natural gas outage in Atascadero to not do anything with their gas meters.

Officials say if you have already turned your meters off, leave them alone.

The main areas affected by the outage are between Highway 41 and Traffic Way.

Crews are on scene working to resolve the issue, but do not know how long it will take to fix.

A command post will be set up Monday, and officials will be delivering a letter to every home impacted.

Atascadero Police officials say people in the affected areas may smell gas while crews are repairing the lines, but say according to SoCal Gas, the area is safe.

Police also say the water is safe to drink.

Anyone with questions about the outage can call SoCal Gas at (661) 699-5089.

If you notice an unusually strong or persistent smell of gas in your area, call the Atascadero Police and Fire Dispatch Center at (805) 461-5051.

Officials say the outage is currently affecting close to 1,000 homes and business in the area.
