Two Central Coast teenagers will compete in the US Swimming Olympic Trials on Monday. A third local athlete will wait until Wednesday to get a chance at making Team USA.
Santa Maria 18 year old Josh Prenot will participate in five events during the next week of the trials in Omaha, Nebraska. On Monday, the Santa Maria Swim Club Member will compete in preliminary heats in the 400 meter individual medley and 100 breastroke. He will compete in the 200m individual medley, 200m breastroke and 200m butterfly later in the week. Prenot knows making the Olympic team is a long shot but warns, you never know. "No one has an automatic Olympic berth, not even (Michael) Phelps or (Ryan) Lochte. The big names still have to try out" said Prenot. The top two swimmers in each event qualify for the Olympics. Prenot will swim at Cal next year.
16 year old Zach Stevens from Arroyo Grande will compete in two events at the trials. The junior to be at Arroyo Grande High School will swim in the 100 and 200 meter breastroke. The 100m breastroke is on Monday (Prenot is in the event as well). Stevens is hoping to gain experience at the trials. "My goal isn't to make the team this time around, it's just to do well. Drop time and drop places" said Stevens.
On Wednesday, Santa Maria native Meghan Zimmer will compete in the women's 200m freestyle. The 22 year old Zimmer swims at San Diego State.
All three swimmers will be making their first appearances at the US Olympic Trials.
