Students in a Santa Maria classroom will soon be sharpening their reading skills thanks to SLO Dental and KSBY's One Class at a Time grant.

We surprised Lauren Koellish's first grade class at Oakley Elementary Thursday afternoon with a $250 education grant.

Koellish says the money is greatly needed because she's a new teacher and doesn't have a lot of resources to work with.

"I plan on using the money to buy books at their independent reading levels so that they will have more opportunities to work with books that they can be successful with and read at their own level," Koellish said, "It's so important in first grade to read."
