A local woman talks to her doctor about getting healthier, and he recommends a diet that our ancestors used 10,000 years ago.
It's been called the caveman diet, Paleo Diet, hunter gatherer, and stone age diet. It consists of eating lean meats, fruits, veggies, nuts, seeds, fish, and healthy fats like avocados. Dairy and grains are not consumed with this diet.
Shawna Wemple began the Paleo Diet, and after a few months, her doctor says she's much healthier.
"So I am at an optimal range for decreased heart disease and I can't think of a better reward than having your health and being able to eat in a way that you don't feel restricted," said Wemple.
Clinical studies have shown the Paleo Diet to lower blood pressure, cholesterol, and improve insulin resistance. Wemple says this way of eating has transformed her, mentally and physically.
"Growing up being put on a diet when I am ten years old and dealing with the embarrassment and shame of what my body looked like," said Wemple.
Today, Wemple is not embarrassed. The owner of a San Luis Obispo Crossfit gym became open minded to the Paleo Diet.
"Basically Shawna took the diet that we prescribed and the workout, and has had the most success she has ever had," said Bill Grunder, owner of Crossfit Inferno. "This diet has nothing to do with weight loss. It's about living a healthier more functional, more active lifestyle. And that's what the Paleo Diet does."
A Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, Dietician says once you put restrictions on what you eat, you will end up binging on those foods. But Shawna says she doesn't feel this way.
"This was an answer for long term. This was a way for me to learn how to eat, and what to eat without having to weigh and measure my food," said Wemple.
The Paleo Diet was created by Dr. Lauren Cordian, an Anthropologist.
