PLACENTIA, Calif. (AP) - Police say an Orange County man fatally shot by SWAT officers told friends he would kill or be killed before returning to jail.

Placentia police said in a statement Monday that the man, whose name has not been released, pointed a shotgun at officers, who feared for their lives and shot him. He was declared dead at a hospital.

Detectives from an auto theft task force were confronted by the man earlier in the afternoon, and the man fled into a trailer behind a home, setting off the standoff with a SWAT team from several police agencies.

Friends of the man contacted authorities and told them he had a warrant out for his arrest and had vowed violence.

The statement says he was shot by officers from Fullerton and Brea.
