The Orcutt Academy girls tennis team's incredible season came to a heartbreaking end on Monday with an 8-10 loss to South Torrance in the CIF Division 4 quarterfinals out at the Allan Hancock College tennis courts.
The Spartans, who were seeded #2 in the bracket, finished the season 19-4 overall. South Torrance, which was seeded #7, improved to 19-3 and advanced to the semifinals for the second year in a row after its latest upset.
Orcutt's Maddie Seeds and Maddie Ortiz overcame an early deficit to beat South's #1 doubles team 7-5 in the first round.
Orcutt trailed 2-4 after the first round of sets and 5-7 after the second round. The Spartans needed to win at least 4 sets in the final round, but could only split the three doubles and three singles sets.
On the flip side, the Santa Ynez girls advanced into the semifinals for the second time in three years. The Pirates routed Garden Grove 15-3 to move on to Wednesday's Division 4 semifinals. They will play on the road at either #1 Cerritos or at El Segundo.
