A local church will soon have a new, larger place to worship.
On Sunday, Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Orcutt broke ground on a new facility. Church leaders say when they moved in to their current location on Orcutt Road years ago they never wanted it to be permanent.
For the past six years congregants have been cramped. Church leaders say they cannot even hold weddings or funerals in the current space.
"We're jubilant," said Greg Kintzi, the pastor. "We are excited and enthused about what this represents in terms of really making an impact in the community, being more visible, being a more attractive space."
The million-dollar facility will feature more classrooms for Bible study and Sunday school. It is expected to be finished by this time next year.
