Out and About: 4th of July in Cayucos

Many of us are just getting back into the swing of things after a fun-filled, three-day holiday weekend.

For a group of kids, including a few of us older kids, the memories of the adventures we had are still bringing smiles. Especially those who were lucky enough to get Out and About with a Band of Pirates at Cayucos celebrations this weekend.

There's a reason the masses come out for the 4th of July celebration in Cayucos. "The kids love it! It's the best place to be on the fourth, there's nothing better to do today." said Peter Swanson, who managed to get a front row seat with his family for the parade.

The moving show that passes through town sets the tone for the whole day. It's as Americana as it gets. Entries include the usual civic groups, classic cars and community characters. "I think there are 65 this year." says Bob Bassett of the Cayucos Fire Department.

"We're just going to have fun...dance, and have fun and be pirates all the way down." says an exuberant Randy Crozier. JT got out and about with a band of pirates on the Schooners float. And joining the crew this year: the kids who have become pen pals with Pirate Randy through their writing lessons at Cambria Elementary. "Everybody has a fantasy, especially little kids, so boom! There we are: pirates!"

It's hard to decide who's has more fun...families, friends and neighbors who make this an annual gathering along the parade route, or those who do so while weaving, waving and rocking their way through town.

But it's exactly why so many choose to get Out and about in Cayucos come the 4th of July.

"It's huge and every year it gets a little bit bigger and a little bit bigger. And we're happy to put it on." says Bassett.

In addition to the parade, there is also a sand-sculpture contest in the early morning on a beach, a Peddlers' Fair, BBQ, and of course fireworks come sunset.
