Over 200 local kids get free school shopping spree thanks to United Way

Over 200 local students were invited to participate in United Way's KidSpree event Sunday.

The event is put on by the San Luis Obispo chapter of United way.

Organizers say 210 kids were paired with a community volunteer and given a $100 gift card to spend on new clothes and supplies for school.

The event is entirely funded by donations from the community and local retailers. It was held at the Kohl's locations in San Luis Obispo and Paso Robles.

"Going back to school with new clothes, it's about self confidence and building their self-esteem. You know, they get this special time where it's just about them. They meet a caring adult volunteer who helps them pick out whatever they want, and to make sure it's just right for them," said Rachel Cementina, the United Way Project Coordinator.

Cementina says fundraising for the event continues year-round, and they're always in need of volunteers. If you're interested in helping, click here.

United Way has been putting on the KidSpree event since 1997.
