Cristina Ozzimo and Kaitlyn Fernandez scored in overtime to deliver a thrilling 3-2 overtime win for the Nipomo girls soccer team over two-time defending Los Padres League champion Cabrillo on Tuesday afternoon.
The win left both teams 9-2 in league matches with one game to play. They trail first place Santa Ynez by one game. The Pirates beat Templeton 3-1 to improve to 10-1 and clinch at least a share of their second title in the last three years. Nipomo and Cabrillo still have a chance to share the league crown.
After the Titans dominated the first half and had numerous scoring chances, the Conquistadores scored late in the first half in the 37th minute. Marissa Reyna sent a ball up ahead to Yessica Bobo, who beat the Titan defender and charging goalie, sending the ball into the open goal.
The Conquistadores carried a 1-0 lead into halftime. The Titans created a serious threat in the 43rd minute when Fernandez sent a ball in the middle of the field to Ozzimo, who created some space between her and a defender, before she sent the ball inside the near post to tie the game 1-1.
It stayed tied in overtime until Ozzimo drilled a free kick into the back of the net to give Nipomo a 2-1 lead after the first ten minute overtime period. Then in the second, Fernandez buried a penalty kick to make it 3-1 Titans. Jamie Miller scored late in the second overtime period for Cabrillo, but Nipomo pulled off the major victory.
Nipomo finishes the season Thursday at home against first place Santa Ynez with a chance to capture a share of the title. Cabrillo plays at Morro Bay in its league finale.
