Packers blow late lead, fall 4-3 to Menlo Park

Dane Vande Guchte hit the game-winning single as the Menlo Park Legends came-from-behind to beat the Santa Maria Valley Packers 4-3 during the opening day of the Rawlings Cup Tournament hosted by the San Luis Obispo Blues on Wednesday afternoon.

The Packers built a 3-1 lead after the fifth, but the Legends battled back and stymied a potential Packer rally in the bottom of the ninth.

Santa Maria Valley scored first with two runs in the third inning on a bases loaded walk drawn by Righetti and Hancock graduate Taylor Mowatt that forced home Andrew Clark. Righetti grad Ron Regalado followed with a basehit that hit off the third baseman's glove to allow fellow Warrior Troy Prober score from third to make it 2-0.

Prober, who just graduated from Righetti, led the Packers with a 3 for 4 effort. Kyle Smith and Zach Nyman had the only other basehits for the Packers.

The Packers carried a 3-2 lead into the top of the eighth after starter Gabe Hernandez, an Arroyo Grande High graduate, went 5 solid innings and allowed just 1 run and 5 hits with 3 strikeouts. Zack Skipper threw the final 4 innings and allowed the tying run in the 8th and the winning run in the 9th. He struck out 4 and allowed 6 hits.

Prober reached second base with the tying run in the ninth with one out, but Mowatt and Regalado could not drive him home.

Three Legends pitchers combined to strike out 13 Packers.

The Packers play the host Blues on Friday at 6 pm at Sinsheimer Stadium.
