Parolee hits, kills two pedestrians in Santa Barbara, then flees

Two people are hit and killed by a van in Santa Barbara.

Santa Barbara Police say just before 7:40 p.m. Saturday, someone reported two people being hit by a silver Chevrolet van on Las Positas Road near Earl Warren Showground. The van drove off, but the witness was able to get the license plate number.

When officers arrived, two victims, a male and a female, were dead. After a quick investigation, officers determined that the van belonged to a parolee and registered sex offender, Jon Steffen Peters, 46. Peters is required to wear a GPS tracking device, and that is how officers found him. Officers also found his van, which had significant damage.

Peters was booked into Santa Barbara County Jail for felony hit and run and violation of parole. Police say it does not appear that he was under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
