Part of Highway 101 to close in Santa Barbara while CHP investigates multi-vehicle crash

A section of Highway 101 in Santa Barbara will be closed Wednesday night while the California Highway Patrol investigates a multi-vehicle accident involving a suspected drunk driver.

CHP says Alejandro Morales-Moscaira from Isla Vista was driving while unlicensed and crashed into the guardrail on Highway 101 North, just south of El Sueno Road Wednesday around 4:30 a.m.

A short time later, another vehicle ran into Morales-Moscaira's 1999 Toyota, which was blocking part of the highway.

Both vehicles were unable to move out of the roadway, causing three other vehicles to also crash.

CHP says five cars were involved and four people were taken to the hospital.

The highway was closed for about two hours after the crashes and traffic was rerouted to Highway 154.

Traffic will be redirected off the northbound part of the highway at Highway 154 around 10 p.m. Wednesday.

CHP is advising drivers to re-enter the highway at El Sueno Road or take the San Marcos Pass.

Morales-Moscaira was taken to the hospital before being booked into the Santa Barbara County Jail on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol.
