Paso's Kelly wins round, Branquinho still leads at National Finals Rodeo

Los Alamos resident Luke Branquinho enters Friday's ninth round of the National Finals Rodeo atop the steer wrestling world standings with two rounds to go. The 32 year old finished out of the money during Thursday's eighth stage with a time of 4.8 seconds, which was good enough for a 10th place finish.

The defending World Champion still has an $18,000 lead in the overall standings over second place Wade Sumpter with two rounds to go. Branquinho, a three-time champion, has $147,183 in earnings in 2012. Sumpter has $129,059. Ethen Thouveneil is in third place with $120,191.

Paso Robles native Dugan Kelly enjoyed his finest night in the ring on Thursday. Kelly and his partner won the team roping competition with a time of 3.90 seconds to earn $18,257. Kelly has earned $82,036 on the season and climbed from 15th place to 14th place in the overall PRCA World Standings among team roping heelers.
