SALINAS, Calif. (AP) - A freight train has slammed into a car along a rural dirt road in California, killing a passenger and injuring the driver and three children.

The Santa Cruz Sentinel says five people were inside the Honda Civic when the train struck the car Sunday afternoon in the Royal Oaks area near Salinas.

All five lived in a small trailer near the tracks.

A 45-year-old mother of six riding in the car was killed.

The California Highway Patrol says the driver is hospitalized with moderate injuries.

Three children, ages 2, 7 and 12, had minor injuries.

There's a stop sign where the dirt road crosses the tracks.
