The California Highway Patrol says it happened Thursday around 7:15 p.m. on Highway 1 just south of Moonstone Beach Drive.

Officers say the man was in the Northbound lane of Highway 1 with his bicycle. He was either standing next to his bike or walking with it, near the fog line. That's the bright white line marking the side of the road.

Officers say that's when a vehicle struck the man from behind and killed him, leaving debris scattered throughout the area.

Both the CHP and San Luis Obispo County Sheriff's deputies responded to the crash.

The man's name has not yet been released.
