Santa Barbara police are trying to figure out what caused a car crash that killed a pedestrian.

That crash happened around 7:30 a.m. Thursday near the corner of Coast Village Road and Butterfly Lane.

Officers say 47-year-old Florinda Garcia Flores was walking on the sidewalk of Coast Village Road when she was hit by a mini-van. She later died at the hospital.

The 17-year-old driver told officers the van suddenly started to veer to the right, and when he tried hitting the brakes, they didn't work. He says that's when the van jumped the curb and hit Flores.

Marijuana was found in the van, but officers say he wasn't under the influence. The vehicle is being checked out.
