People in Santa Maria are reaching out to help the families of school children in need.

The Northern Santa Barbara County United Way combined with other local organizations to Stuff the Bus Saturday.

The group collected all sorts of supplies to benefit students in the Santa Maria-Bonita and Orcutt school districts.

Organizers say the supplies are needed now more than ever.

"There are 17,000 kids in the school districts and probably close to 50% of that number actually need some real assistance with the types of school supplies that we collect and distribute," said Eddie Taylor of the Northern Santa Barbara County United Way.

Saturday's Stuff the Bus event collected more than $15,000 worth of school supplies.
