People in SLO get amnesty from parking tickets during the holidays

People who thought they got parking tickets in downtown San Luis Obispo recently may have been surprised at what they actually said. During the holiday season, parking officials give offenders a friendly warning, in the form of a rhyme.

"Well, this is a holiday reminder, a one time professional courtesy notice. While you were busy shopping about, the time on your meter unfortunately ran out," read parking officer Paul Osteen.

Instead of writing a $33 ticket, parking violators are greeted by a little visit from the Christmas elf.

But Osteen says there are still ways to find yourself in trouble. He says don't park in red zones or handicap spaces, for example.

The ticket amnesty program only lasts until after Christmas morning. Parking officials suggest shoppers use parking garages to avoid having to worry about meters.
