The South County People's Kitchen will not be able to stay at its current location, which is on a dirt lot along the Grand Avenue corridor and 16th street in Grover Beach.
On Monday night, the Grover Beach city council voted 4 to 1 in favor of upholding the planning commission's denial of a temporary use permit. The council did, however, give the People's Kitchen a 45-day extension to allow them time to figure out where to go next.
The People's Kitchen's president, Betsy Ehrler said she was disappointed in the council's decision, but thankful for the 45-day extension. She said she was optimistic and had faith that the People's Kitchen will find a new location in time.
Many who attended the 4 1/2 hour long meeting were in support of having the People's Kitchen stay, but, there was a large group of concerned citizens also in attendance who felt like the People's Kitchen's location attracted more homeless people and a transient population.
The People's Kitchen has until Friday, November 22 to find a new location.
