SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - UC Santa Barbara right-handed pitcher Austin Pettibone signed a contract with the Texas Rangers Tuesday after the organization selected him in the 24th round as the 724th overall pick of the Major League Baseball draft earlier this month.
After throwing 254 innings in Blue and Gold and posting a career ERA of 3.40, Pettibone will skip his senior season and become the third member of his immediate family to play professional baseball.
His older brother Jonathan Pettibone is currently on the Philadelphia Phillies and their father Jay played one season in the majors after also being drafted by the Texas Rangers as a pitcher in 1979.
Pettibone started 10 games for the Gauchos this past season with a 2.81 ERA and a 5-1 record.
The Big West honored Pettibone as the conference's Pitcher of the Week on March 12 after he threw his second career complete-game shutout.
