Physical fitness can help prevent depression in preteens.
A new study of sixth graders found those who performed better on a cardio-respiratory fitness test were less likely to feel depressed during seventh grade.
The effect was strongest in girls, but boys also showed a small mental health benefit from fitness.
Researchers say these findings are important because depression that begins in adolescence often leads to chronic symptoms later in life.
